What Is a Limited License Legal Technician?

A Limited License Legal Technician, or LLLT, is a legal professional licensed by the Washington State Supreme Court to provide certain family law services under Admission and Practice Rule 28 (APR 28). LLLTs offer an affordable option for people who need legal advice and support with divorce, parenting plans, child support, and other permitted family law matters.

How Can an LLLT Help?

Within their permitted scope, LLLTs can:

• Explain your legal options and help you understand your next steps.
• Prepare and file court documents.
• Help with service, court scheduling, and deadlines.
• Review paperwork you receive and explain what it means.
• Help you prepare for hearings and settlement discussions.
• Negotiate on your behalf with your written permission defining what may be negotiated.

Experienced Legal Support

LLLTs have legal education, training, and supervised work experience. They must follow professional ethics rules, protect your confidential information, and complete continuing legal education. When providing authorized services, they are held to the same standard of care as a Washington attorney.

Understanding the Limits

LLLTs are not attorneys, and their licenses cover specific services. You remain responsible for representing yourself in court, although APR 28 allows limited assistance at certain hearings and settlement proceedings. If an issue falls outside an LLLT’s authority, they will explain when you need an attorney’s help.
